Ushering In National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

It’s that time of year again: thick sweaters, pumpkin-flavored everything, and of course, pink is everywhere. Everything goes pink in October, and it’s not a result of changing leaves. It’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM).

Every October, businesses add pink to their websites, logos, public branding (and more) in support of breast cancer awareness. QualityStocks is no different. Our website and blog will be pink for the entire month. We’ve been committed to this cause for years, and we’re proud to show our support once again by “going pink.” We’ll also be posting a series of blogs throughout the month on topics related to breast cancer research, awareness, and any other news we think you need to know.

To kick off QualityStocks’ month of breast cancer awareness, we’re dedicating our first blog to some “fast facts” about the disease. You may be aware of some of this information, but some information might be new, especially given the amount of research and development that takes place in a year’s time. All we know is that the news about breast cancer is always changing, and we’re committed to keeping our readers (and ourselves) up to date with the latest information.

And now for those facts:

• NBCAM has been around for 25 years; it was started to teach people about how to detect and prevent breast cancer from spreading;
• About 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in her lifetime;
• Doctors expect over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2013;
• Early detection is key; survival rate is 98% when detected early and at a localized stage;
• Breast cancer affects both women and men; though the percentage of men with breast cancer is small, it is still possible;
• Self-examination, clinical breast exams, and routine mammograms are the most effective ways to detect this disease.

Unfortunately, there’s not much one can do to prevent breast cancer, and scientists are still searching for a cure. That’s what NBCAM is all about: drawing attention to a cause in the hopes that keeping it top of mind could one day result in a magic bullet solution. Until then, we here at QualityStocks will continue to do our part – starting with our pink website.
