1. Fire – Water Bombing: The company’s IL 78 tankers, while originally designated for aerial refueling, have “waterbombing” capabilities. These waterbombing capabilities allow the aircrafts the ability to provide disaster relief services such as extinguishing wildfires by flying overhead at low altitudes and dispersing water or fire retardant. Currently, the company has already designated a number of IL-76 cargo aircraft for this purpose.
Thousands of acres of forest and grassland are destroyed by wildfires each year, and an effective solution to extinguish such fires have been sought by US governmental agencies for years. By using these aircrafts to extinguish such fires, these aircraft can be contracted out to these agencies upon minimal notice.
