Superlattice Power Inc. (SLAT.OB) to Potentially Join Forces with Major U.S. Company for Further Development of Lithium Ion Battery Technology

Superlattice Power, Inc. announced today after the bell that it is working towards a partnership with a major U.S. company to achieve advanced development of lithium ion battery technology with partially lithiated anode and cathode technology.

Fully lithiated cathode materials with unlithiated anode materials lose their total capacity by huge amounts after just a few preliminary cycles. Although metallic oxide anodes have the potential to hold a charge longer compared to carbonaceous materials, investigated metal oxide anodes suffer large irreversible capacity losses due to the formation of solid electrolyte interfaces (SEI) and irreversible lithium oxide in metallic oxide anode. Dedicated effort and many process steps are required to reduce the formation of lithium oxide, which reduces the reversible capacity due to a deficiency of lithium ions present in the anode structure.

According to the news release, Dr. Vishal Mahajan and Dr. Surajit Sengupta are currently working closely with a major company focused on lithium technology for this progression. Once a partially lithiated anode and cathode lithium ion rechargeable battery system is introduced, the battery industry will benefit from several major advantages ranging from improved cycle life to negligible loss of initial capacity during preliminary cycles.
