Superlattice Power Incorporated is innovating the battery for the first time in years. The company is an emerging leader in the field of batteries. They pride themselves in the development and marketing of next generation lithium-powered batteries. Recently the company announced a successful breakthrough, allowing electric vehicles to be driven over 200 miles compared to the current 120 to 140 mile range, and operate at a wide voltage range between 4.3V to 2V.
The most recent development was the successful creation of a new cathode material. The material will be incorporated into a lithium-ion-polymer battery and significantly increases operating voltage range and energy density. The pure material was produced in-house and has been synthesized at an industrial scale. In addition to new cathode materials, the company’s success has been derived from its unique superlattice structure which can accommodate more lithium and therefore generate more energy.
Despite the success Superlattice Power has already generated, they continue to push their research and development team. The ultimate objectives for the new batteries is to have a less-or-zero exothermic (outside heat generation) reaction, a wider voltage range, a higher capacity (170Ah/kg+), and to reach these results in an inexpensive and environmentally safe manner. The Director of Battery Research and Development at Superlattice Power, Dr. Surajit Sengupta, said it best in a recent interview: “Our objective is to create the next generation of Lithium Ion Polymer battery that is environmentally non-toxic, safe, less expensive and more powerful.”
