Brazil has the flex-fuel know how. They are the world’s leader in the adoption of ethanol fuel. In April, 76.8 pct of all new vehicles or 95,596 units registered in Brazil were “flex-fuel.” Latin America’s biggest nation, Brazil is hailed as a model for its use of renewable fuels, and ethanol is available at virtually all its gas stations.
Flex-fuel vehicles sales are driven by skyrocketing international oil prices. Brazil is a major producer of ethanol, which is distilled from sugar cane and sells for about half the price of gasoline in the country.
A flex-fuel car looks just like any other — and costs the same as comparable models — but with a few internal changes. The fuel is biodegradable and has the highest oxygen content of any transportation fuel, which means it burns cleaner than gasoline.
Fewer exhaust emissions mean less smog. E85 (eighty-five percent ethanol and fifteen percent gasoline) reduces greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide, the main contributor to global warming, by as much as 39% to 46% when compared to gasoline.
Sensors in the engine determine which fuel the vehicle is using and adjust the combustion and spark accordingly. Because ethanol is more corrosive than gasoline, the cars also have special hoses in the fuel delivery system.
The National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition also has a list of E85 filling stations on its Web site at http://www.e85fuel.com%20. South Dakota-based ethanol producer VeraSun Energy Corp. plans to have 50 E85 pumps on two major interstates between Chicago and Kansas City.
This year’s California state budget set aside $10 million to create an infrastructure for E85, said Karen Caesar, California Air Resources Board information officer. The goal is to add ethanol pumps to existing stations, she said.
Steve Schneider, CEO of ZAP stated, “Having the flex-fuel option works for us. But it’s important to remember the Obvio ! has the option of being entirely electric as well. We have got all the bases covered and we believe that is precisely what the consumer wants. The cost of operating a vehicle is a significant factor in the purchaser’s decision. Obvio ! stands out as the Obvio ! us choice.”
Flex-fuel is just part of the story. ZAP is using the ‘modular method’ of production. This is cost efficient to ZAP . The ‘modular method’ method means that the suppliers assemble the vehicles for Obvio ! at the Obvio ! premises in Brazil.
