By targeting Mexico WYDY not only will increase its market share in Mexico but will see it increase in the United States as well. There is a huge cross-over market. Newly arrived immigrants will look for familiar flavors and brands and Hispanics returning to Mexico will be introduced to the brand while there. Upon their return to the United States they will be able to find it here as well.
According to New York-based flavourist Virginia Dare, Hispanics are the fastest growing segment of the US population, accounting for 50% of the annual population growth. Virginia Dare says Hispanics currently comprise 14% of the total US population and it is estimated that by 2050, this segment will grow to over 100m people, representing 24.4% of the total US population. Furthermore, the Hispanic influence has had a substantial impact on mainstream American tastes in food and drinks.
Virgina Dare’s study points out that Hispanics comprise a number of ‘subsets’, from Mexican-Americans in New Mexico and Colorado with years of family history living in the US through newly arrived Mexican immigrants living in non-traditional locations such as the mid-south, the New York metro areas and New England. They have different taste preferences but a trait common to all is brand loyalty.
The Mexican food and beverage industry has transformed and is booming on both sides of the Mexican-US border. According to Market Research, the Mexican food industry in the US is estimated at $52 billion and growing, with seven in ten surveyed households using Mexican food/ingredients.
On the other side of the border, “Mexico posts the greatest export opportunity for every US beverage company large and small,” according to Mexico Beverage . The following data comes from Mexico Beverage:
Mexico is a great consumer of beverage as a country and one of the best per capita. For example, Mexico leads the world in the consumption of Soda per capita (some years it’s Mexico other years it’s the USA).
Beverage Sales Channels
- 75% of the sales are through mini markets, mom and pop’s, gas stations, and liquor stores
- 24% is through restaurants, schools, clubs, hotels, and entertainment places
- Supermarkets represent 1% of sales
Mexico’s growth is in “alternative drinks” like energy drinks, vitamin drinks, juices, juice water, and bottled water.
Who’s Your Daddy Energy drink is packaged to appeal to the consumer in Mexico and timed at the beginning of the craze for “alternate drinks.” Mexico Beverage indicates this is no ‘hard’ research on the growth of energy drinks in Mexico because they are so new but states: “by our estimates it’s [sic. energy drinks] growing at 200% per year or more.”
Stay tuned as we continue to examine this WYDY’s smart like a fox strategy.
