Harvard Learning Center: School Security New Focus

Stock Guru Profile Harvard Learning Center

Harvard Learning Centers, Inc. has signed a Letter of Intent to acquire an early-stage security product development company, holding proprietary technology under a newly filed and accepted patent application for a campus and classroom security alert/protection system which will be finalized and beta-tested by the end of 2007. Terms of the pending transaction have not been disclosed. The transaction is expected to close by the end of June 2007.

It is anticipated that this product will sell into the same educational market as HVLN’s traditional services. Looking Glass has already taken the steps to get a ‘patent pending’ on their technology giving them a very formal head start on any competition. This is Harvard Learning Center’s first foray into the realm of proprietary technology.

Last week at the at the National Campus Security Summit at the University of Central Oklahoma, former FBI profiler Clint Van Zandt, said that mass shootings have occurred on 45 school campuses in the past decade, but law enforcement still cannot predict who will be the next killer. David Paulison, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said his agency now is charged with helping campuses prepare and train for tragedies like Virginia Tech.

UCO President Roger Webb, who is a former Oklahoma public safety commissioner, said most campus police departments are very good at crowd control or providing security to high-ranking visitors. But they lack the training to take down a campus shooter like the one that killed 32 people at Virginia Tech last month. Millions of dollars in grants are available to campus police departments for training, equipment and other safety needs. Webb said more money must be directed to campus police, which have been a low priority at many colleges.

Harvard Learning Center is entering a field that did not exist five years ago with a head start on the competition.
