Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) , generally regarded as the 6th major imaging modality, is a new light-based imaging technology for bio-medical application. OCT imaging technology, applied in dentistry, represents a major advance in dental diagnostics as it enables the capture of detailed characterization of hard tissue (teeth) and soft tissue (gums), at a resolution of up to 10 X that of currently used x-ray. This enables the dentist to make earlier and more accurate diagnosis of oral diseases such as decay and periodontal diseases. Early detection enables non- or minimally invasive techniques to be empolyed to arrest, and even reverse oral diseases. Less invasive treatment enhances the patient experience and results in a higher standard of care.

The currently used dental x-ray modality, a mainstay of imaging in dental practices today, was first introduced into dentistry in 1885. While there have been improvements over the last 121 years, most recently the development of digital x-ray, the basic format and resolution of information captured has not advanced. X-ray has severe limitations in providing the images needed for early detection of diseases. OCT, by contrast, provides information that is needed to make early and accurate diagnosis of oral disease and, as it is light-based, does so without any harmful radiation.

Imaging Technology History indicates the introduction of modalities as follows:

* 1885 – The X-ray
* 1965 – Ultrasound
* 1973 – CT Scan
* 1983 – MRI
* 1999 – PET Scan
* 2003 – OCT

The first five Imaging Modalities are particularly suited to specific areas of bio-medical imaging. However, cost and size primarily preclude them from being used chairside in a dental office. All the dental literature and research show that dentistry urgently needs a chairside oral imaging system that provides immediate quantitative and qualitative information to aid in performing accurate diagnostic procedures. The unique characteristics of OCT will enable dentistry to move forward towards the medical model – treat disease early on, when you find it.

Lantis Laser Inc. is focused on developing its exclusive OCT Dental Imaging System(TM) for use in general dentistry under License from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and LightLab Imaging.

“OCT is the newest imaging modality and it is ideally suited for dentistry as scans of teeth and gums can be taken in the mouth, chairside, to help the dentist make a quick and accurate diagnosis. Dentists have never seen anything like this before,” said Stan Baron last Friday to Stock Guru. Stan is the President and CEO of Lantis.
