Counterfeiting Impacts Even the Super Bowl

IDGJ ready to move on counterfeiting and piracy and there can be no question but that this will be the most pervasive crime of the Twenty-first Century.
Homeland Security is deeply involved in counterfeiting but it looks like their abilities, while important, are very limited. Policing counterfeiting will ultimately fall to the manufacturers who will in turn rely on the creativity and ingenuity of IDGJ and other innovators in the field.
In fiscal 2007, Homeland Security partnered with U.S. Customs and Border Protection to seize nearly $200 million in counterfeit or pirated merchandise nationwide. During that same period, Homeland Security and Customs made more than 13,600 IPR seizures, resulting in 241 arrests, 149 indictments, and 134 criminal convictions.
No question about it, that’s a good number of arrests but that is only the tip of the iceberg.
It’s not just fake luxury goods (made by enslaved children in China) or phony pharmaceuticals with the potential to poison directly or kill indirectly by being fake, counterfeiting impacted the Super Bowl.
More than $140,000 worth of counterfeited sports-related clothing and memorabilia from a sports memorabilia were confiscated from store in Glendale, Arizona, on the eve of the Super Bowl — where the Super Bowl was played.
Homeland Security and local law enforcement have recovered more than 1,200 pieces of counterfeit sports memorabilia. Most of the seized items were fake NFL merchandise, but Homeland Security also seized counterfeit Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association jerseys and fake designer handbags and watches.
While the actions of Homeland Security are impressive, it’s obvious, these recovered items represent on a small fraction of the counterfeit goods actually in circulation.
Companies will look to IDGJ to deliver the protection they really need.
