Algae and Feedstock
Proprietary AlgaeGro Cultivars
The company develops proprietary Algae-Gro algae, Jatropha, Field Penny-cress cultivars with characteristics for successful and cost effective growth in their specific environmental sites and for their specific symbiotic application. Also, being developed are various grasses and strains of wild radishes. The proprietary strains emphasize rapid cell cycle replication or growth, hardiness, lipid content and lipid extraction availability.
Cultivars Development, Evaluation and Propagation
Rapid advances in botanical genetics, tissue Culture and molecular genetics have accelerated the development of Cultivars – specially selected for desired concentration and characteristics for commercial products. The Company’s consultants and their collaborators in academia and industry are utilizing these novel techniques to cultivate unique varieties with enhanced lipid synthesis suitable for commercial production of bio-diesel feedstock and oil extraction. Governmental funding has supported the collection of over 100 natural strains of oil rich algae and other vegetative species. These native species grow on marginal soil and water and do not compete with conventional food resources. GeoBio Energy, Inc. is isolating selected strains exhibiting oil content 10-15% per / dry wt., rapid cell replication rates, temperature tolerance, resistance to Zooplankton infection, low nutritional requirements, minimal water quality – salinity and pH, ease of harvest and oil extraction. Established techniques are used for genotype selection, colony isolation, genome fixation, seed stock preservation and storage. Propagation is accelerated through new biotechnology procedures. Unique Cultivars that demonstrate competitive adaptation will be DNA typed to protect their proprietary status.
Algae-Gro Structures
These proprietary growing structures, collaboratively developed by Hydro-Safe Inc. and Resource Capital Development, Inc., are central to the company’s feedstock production growth systems. Algae-Gro structures are modular structures that can be photo-bioreactors. The light source is normally shaded solar sometimes augmented with photovoltaic to extend nighttime growth. For ease of visualization, think of the Algae-Gro structures as water situated grow baskets, tubs and tubes with solar covers with easy access for harvesting and inexpensive tubing for control of water and nutrient flow. The modularity of the structures allows systems to be fitted to the size and shape of the area in which a project is installed. Materials are “off-the-shelf” so as to maintain low cost.
The features of the structure that are significant are:
* durable
* low cost
* permeable barriers
Composed of an exclusive membrane to limit contaminants and zooplankton, and contain algae. This allows for exchange of the necessary growth nutrients light, water, CO2, O2, heat and minerals. In normal situations, the Algae-Gro structures are set up in a contiguous series or line with a calculated width. This allows ease of harvest. Sites are always designed to allow for ease of access by mechanical or automated harvesting equipment. To make feedstock growth in the United States viable, cost must be mitigated or supported through joint uses.
These costs include the cost for land, water, materials, harvesting and oil extraction. However, once the infrastructure is developed, relatively low ongoing costs of operation allow for strong profits to be realized from harvesting of the feedstock and production of the oil from lipids to be used in the production of bio-fuels, hydrogen, and low cost heat.
The Algae-Gro structures if necessary can be of use in the growth of Algar-Gro cultivars other than algae, but they are essential for algae growth to maintain strain integrity, and facilitate providing appropriate nutrients and ease of harvesting. In addition, to being of use in feedstock production for the company, the Company uses them to grow, naturally select, and protect its proprietary Algae-Gro cultivars.
