Gas-to-liquid (GTL) is Franklin Mining’s new focus in the Province of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.
Franklin Mining intends to build a 10,000 barrel per day Gas to Liquid plant in the south Argentine Tierra del Fuego province. Company officials have just returned from a visit to possible construction sites in the region. Link here for map of Tierra del Fuego.
Under an agreement signed with local authorities in November of 2006, Franklin Mining is guaranteed the “required amount” of gas for the project over 25 years. Franklin hopes to secure finance for the proposed plant – the biggest of its kind in South America – after recent visits to Switzerland. Construction of the plant is expected to take thirty months.
What is Gas to Liquid?
The concept behind gas-to-liquid involves converting hydrocarbon gases into hydrocarbon liquids through the catalytic Fischer-Tropsch process, named after the German scientists who discovered it some eighty years ago.
The process has the potential to tap remote areas of the world for stranded natural gas supplies that might otherwise not make it to market. Experimental plants are in operation in various isolated parts of the world.
Converting the gas into diesel means it can be more readily transported by pipeline or by sea to other markets. The resulting product is an extremely clean diesel with virtually no sulfur, extremely high cetane, low density and very good cold flow. Reduced lubricity is the only downside from a performance perspective.
Diesel fuels industry is not just for over the road tractor trailers. More on that tomorrow! There is a huge market for diesel.
Franklin Mining’s long history of experience in Bolivia puts it in the perfect position to capitalize on the growing demand for a cleaner burning fuel and Gas to Liquid is precisely that fuel. Franklin Mining had the right expertise at the right place at the right time.
The importance of alternative engine fuels is front and center for business, government, and personal lives. A confluence of factors–including environmental concerns, fervent national economic interests, intense political pressure from agricultural lobbies, and uncertainty over the cost and continued availability of crude oil–has renewed numerous worldside attention to alternative means of fueling diesel fleets and the incredible amount of equipment that runs on diesel.
Diesel fuels helps to alleviate air quality issues because it emits fewer particulates into the air and can reduce nitrous oxide emissions.
Our world consumes an estimated eighty million barrels of oil a day and alternative diesel fuels such as Franklin Mining’s proposed Gas to Liquid fuel has a supporting role to play in worldwide energy needs.
