Why Hydrogen?

Stock GuruProfile – OTCBB: ETLY – ECOtality, Inc.- The Fuel Cell Store

ECOtality comes to the hydrogen market with an all encompassing, well thought out business plan. When you look at the package they are bringing to the market in its whole, you realize these guys have decided to come at the hydrogen market from all perspectives. Retail, education, online presence, blogging, and Research and Development with the biggest Universities in the field.

I have focused on this dynamic company one segment at a time, but hopefully you are getting the overall picture: this is a great business model for the new energy world order!

Hydrogen for the Hydratus system employs the simplest, lightest and most abundant element in the universe, making up 90% of all matter — hydrogen. It is made up of just one electron and one proton and is, therefore, the first element in the periodic table. In the context of a hydrogen economy, hydrogen is not a primary energy source. Rather, hydrogen acts as a medium for energy. Hydrogen is a cleaner source of energy because hydrogen eliminates the release of pollutants (such as greenhouse gasses) at the point of end use. There’s no carbon dioxide, no particulates and no sulphur emissions. It’s this clean-burn nature that’s firing the interest of growing numbers of oil multinationals, car-makers and energy companies.

Hydrogen from the Hydratus System as a portable energy source bypasses all the infrastructure issues required of hydrogen as a fuel for vehicles. This makes pure sense!

While hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, it rarely exists in its pure form in the environment, preferring instead to bond with other elements such as oxygen to form water and carbon to form hydrocarbons such as oil and gas. To create pure hydrogen, energy is needed to break these bonds.

Because an external energy source is needed to produce it, hydrogen strictly speaking isn’t a primary energy source like coal, sunlight or wind, but instead is generally referred to as being an energy carrier like electricity.

Hydrogen can be produced from from water using electricity from renewable energy which produces no CO2 emissions in the process. Using renewable energy to produce hydrogen produces what is known as “green hydrogen”. Fuel cells are about twice as efficient as internal combustion engines so can help compensate for any energy loss in the gas’s production. The increasing use of hydrogen-powered fuel cells in cars are crucial for maximizing hydrogen’s potential. ”

Hydratus System Showcase

ECOtality’s Fuel Cell Store will serve as an ideal launch pad for the 5 to 10kW Hydratus system under development. Hydratus is a portable apparatus that addresses the commercialization issues facing hydrogen fuel cell technologies by producing hydrogen on-demand.

How and Why Hydrogen Works

While hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, it rarely exists in its pure form in the environment, preferring instead to bond with other elements such as oxygen to form water and carbon to form hydrocarbons such as oil and gas. To create pure hydrogen, energy is needed to break these bonds.

Because an external energy source is needed to produce it, hydrogen strictly speaking isn’t a primary energy source like coal, sunlight or wind, but instead is generally referred to as being an energy carrier like electricity.

ECOtality is making this happen with collaborative research with the leading universities in the world on this subject, The Fuel Cell Store, their very cool blog, real world products, and educational products.
