CWLC’s video surveillance business represents an incredible opportunity at the beginning of a powerful trend. In China the demand for video surveillance is tremendous and in Dallas, where CWLC is located as well, the demand is extremely high profile.
CHINA DEMAND
Guangzhou, capital of South China’s Guangdong Province, has extended the city’s surveillance system by 100,000 cameras.
The new units, which will cost the local government 200 million yuan ($26.4 million), will take the total in the city to 230,000 by the year’s end.
They are placing these cameras on buses, in streets, in railway stations and at other public places.
According to municipal police, between January and July, surveillance cameras provided police with 800 clues, which were used to help solve 570 cases.
Police figures show that more than 80 percent of the cases solved in the first seven months of the year were done so with the aid of clues from the video cameras.
The presence of the cameras also serve as a deterrant.
DALLAS, TEXAS
Dallas now joins Chicago and San Francisco in police monitoring of crime ridden neighborhoods. City officials have added another neighborhood to video surveillance monitoring. This is the first residential neighborhood to be monitored by remote video in Dallas and represents a powerful trend to rid neighborhoods from drug dealing.
Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle described the cameras as “14 new sets of eyes” for police in the 62-block Jubilee Park neighborhood.
He said cameras will be erected in two other neighborhoods because local business and civic groups are backing them and are willing to pay some of the cost.
Linking Video Surveillance to ID Technology
A report published last month by the ACLU of Northern California said the cameras can be combined with emerging technologies such as automated identification software, or face and eye scans linked to law enforcement databases.
“Video surveillance … creates the potential for the government to monitor people in public space in a way envisioned only in futuristic novels,” the report concluded.
Continuing demand from casinos, airports, banks, and hospitals are drivers in the IP video surveillance market.
SMALL TOWN USA
But perhaps what is most telling in terms of drivers for this industry is what is going on in small towns. Remember the birthplace of Bill Clinton, Hope, Arkansas? When tiny Hope, Arkansas, installs video surveillance you know this is becoming as ubiquitous as another Arkansas giant, WalMart.
The Arkansas Gazette report police departments in Hot Springs and Hope are installing video surveillance.
“Video surveillance is exploding across the country,” said John Firman, director of research at the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Improvements in technology and a reduction in costs have made video surveillance more accessible for even the smallest cities, Firman said.
