The Facts of Marketing to Hispanics
Based on a recent study from Simmons Market Research, 30 percent of the Hispanic cell phone users have international coverage on their cell phone. Hispanics are an upwardly mobile group with a solid and growing middle class. They make up an exploding consumer group-by 2010 their purchasing power will add up to about $1 trillion a year.
The American Community Survey recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau shows that overwhelming numbers of new immigrants to the United States speak Spanish.
ATSX marketing recognizes the dynamics of today’s Hispanic Americans. Recent Nielsen and Simmons studies affirm that Hispanics are far more apt to respond to an ad or a commercial in Spanish, whether it is on TV or online. Advertisers want to appeal to the heart of their consumers. And for Hispanics, the language of the heart is Spanish.
The number of Spanish-speakers in the U.S continues to rise: 33 million in 2005, up from 28 million in 2000. 76 percent of Hispanic children ages 5 to 17 who were born in the U.S. speak fluent English and continue to speak Spanish at home.
Marketing which targets the Hispanic community is particularly effective because Spanish is spoken both in the home and within the community notwithstanding fluency in English. Univision’s statistical data indicates the Hispanic community continues to watch Spanish-language television together and trust information delivered to them in Spanish-whether they are new to this country or third-generation Americans.
This is a significant departure from the assimilation of behaviors of previous immigrant groups. Hispanics who have lived in the U.S. for two decades still speak more Spanish than English. Children who are born here learn Spanish and retain it. The family watches telenovelas and noticias (news) together on TV. Teens, parents, toddlers and grandparents all communicate in Spanish. Children and adults communicate, in Spanish, on a regular basis with friends and family still living in Spanish-speaking countries. Numerous surveys conducted by Nielsen Media Research and Simmons Market Research show more than 90 percent of Hispanics believe it is very important that their children and grandchildren have the ability to speak and read Spanish.
The U.S. is now the fifth-largest Spanish-speaking nation, poised to become second-largest (behind Mexico) within a decade. Hispanic immigrants stay connected with family and friends in their homeland through the Internet, a proliferation of inexpensive calling plans and relatively affordable, frequently scheduled flights.
According to Simmons Market Research Bureau, more than half of the predominately Spanish speakers in the United States feel more respect for companies that advertise in Spanish, feel more loyal to companies that advertise in Spanish and remember products that are advertised in
