SmallCapVoice Featured Company: PositiveID Corp. (PSID)

PositiveID is an emerging growth company focused on the development of cutting-edge technologies for diabetes management and rapid medical testing, as well as airborne bio-threat detection systems for the U.S. homeland defense industry. Microfluidic Systems (MFS), the company’s wholly owned subsidiary, specializes in developing microfluidic systems for the automated preparation and performance of biologic assays – detecting biological threats at high-value locations and analyzing samples in a medical environment.

PositiveID acquired MicroFluidic Systems in May 2011. MFS’ microfluidic technology assuages every existing problem by replacing robotics with integrated microfluidics, thus reducing cost and improving reliability. MFS’ microfluidic technology also automates and increases the effectiveness of key sample processing steps currently used on the laboratory bench-top into a closed, automated system. The embedded devices perform cell lysis in less than one minute (including difficult spores) at a low-power, nucleic acid purification, as well as inhibitor removal and pre-concentration of the nucleic acids up to factors of 1000X within minutes. All of these processes occur autonomously within a fully contained, disposable microfluidic cartridge.

Based in Delray Beach, Fla., PositiveID Corporation was formed in 2009 through a merger between VeriChip Corporation and Steel Vault Corporation. The company’s two main divisions of operation are HealthID and MicroFluidic Systems. The HealthID division focuses on developing unique medical devices primarily relating to diabetes management.
