Dutton Associates Featured Company: QPC Lasers, Inc. (QPCI.OB)

QPC Lasers, Inc. (OTCBB: QPCI) has established themselves as a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of high-power semiconductor lasers serving the consumer, industrial, defense, and medical fields. The company is responsible for the development of a patented high-brightness, chip-based laser technology possessing the potential to reduce the size, cost, and weight of lasers by as much as 10X, while at the same time dramatically improving their energy efficiency and portability. As of today, the company’s lasers are being utilized around the world in the development of next-generation laser based HD-TV, cancer treatment, and laser weapons. QPC has a strong belief that their technology will enable them to capture significant market share in their target markets within the coming years.

The company’s high-brightness semiconductor laser technology is enabling the direct use of diode lasers in a new range of medical and biomedical applications where gas, liquid, or solid state lasers were previously the only solution. Diode lasers provide an alternative for medical applications because of their compact size, efficiency, low cost, and ability to produce large optical energies. Current medical areas where these lasers are used include: hair removal, dental, ophthalmic, and other dermatological applications.

Within the medical imaging field, the diode laser is emerging as a more effective solution, replacing other methods. MRI technologies have difficulty producing images with several organs (such as the lungs) because of lack of water present, since MRI’s rely on inherent electro-magnetic dipole associated with the water molecules to produce images. In order to significantly improve magnetic resonance imaging in these applications, diode lasers are used to produce a spin polarized inert atomic vapor, which is then delivered into the intended imaging area. The inert gas does not react with the organ being imaged, but the presence alone allows the MRI technology to produce higher quality images than ordinary MRI.

The compactness, light weight and ruggedness of semiconductor lasers has made them ideal for military and aerospace applications. Semiconductor lasers are being utilized in a wide array of applications including the transmission of optical energy to a target, and receiving a portion of it back in order to measure various physical properties of the target in a remote fashion. QPC’s high-brightness semiconductor laser technology is enabling diode lasers to be used directly in applications where DPSS lasers were the only solution.

The laser material-processing sector is one of the world’s largest laser markets, with applications ranging from cutting and welding at high power levels to marking and plastics welding at lower outputs. Diode lasers are showing that they perform magnificently because of their high efficiency and compact size, thus reducing operating costs when compared to conventional gas and solid state laser solutions. As a result, several direct diode materials processing applications are highly successful today, including plastics welding, soldering, surface hardening, and coarse marking. In the near and far future, diode lasers will enable further applications and reduce costs because of their efficiency and ruggedness.
