Cannabis Science, Inc., a pioneering U.S. biotech company developing pharmaceutical cannabis products released today a statement along with poll data regarding the legalization of marijuana. Polls taken in California show that 49% of Californians are in favor of legalization with 41% opposed. The Company predicts that recent legal action in Los Angeles County that will effectively close over 400 dispensaries will make the environment more favorable to the advancement of medical science utilizing cannabis. While medical marijuana is a hot button issue in the political realms, medical patients who use it see it as an absolute necessity.
Cannabis Science works with world authorities on phytocannabinoid science targeting critical illnesses, and adheres to scientific methodologies to develop, produce, and commercialize phytocannabinoid-based pharmaceutical products. Medical marijuana products help to alleviate the suffering of many different ailments, including nausea from chemotherapy, insomnia, and pain from chronic condition illnesses such as AIDS. Thirteen states currently have medical marijuana laws and seven more are currently forming legislation to support the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Cannabis Science, Inc. is poised to capitalize on the expansion of legalization practices and seeks to distribute their cannabis-based products.
Richard Cowan, Cannabis Science CFO, and like Dr. Robert Melamede, PhD., Cannabis Science President and CEO a long-time advocate of the legalization of marijuana, noted, “We certainly think that the move to close so many medical marijuana dispensaries in Los Angeles is likely to increase the majorities in favor of the legalization initiative in the fall. We believe that only full legalization will protect the patients and the public. Marijuana prohibition is a public health disaster and Cannabis Science is happy to be in a position to advance the science of medical cannabis and continue to be an ongoing resource for all our patients in need.”
A vote comes to California in November 2010 on the issue. If recent poll results are an indication of actual voters, California may become the first state to fully legalize Marijuana for personal consumption. Other places across the country are also taking baby steps towards legalization. Philadelphia today enacted a marijuana leniency law, which states that anyone with under one ounce of cannabis will be downgraded to a summary offense and be expunged from the system.
