Listening to politicians talk about healthcare reform is always an exercise in futility. But when healthcare reform does happen, being in the right place with the right services could be very profitable. Where that right place might be is anybody’s guess, but many are staking their claim and hoping for the best.
Bederra Corporation, a Houston based equipment financing company, works to help the industry in obtaining beneficial financing for equipment lease and purchase. It specializes in the healthcare field, aiding medical clinics, imagining centers and hospitals. The company recently expanded its healthcare position within the Houston area to include the now wholly-owned subsidiary, Diagnos Inc.
From all appearances, the company is working to expand its healthcare reach by offering a range of clinic-style operations revolving around digital imaging in the Houston area. Its first acquisition involves imaging services that are currently served by just 15 machines in a market base of 5 million people. According to company statements, this first acquisition is only the first as it searches for additional digital imaging opportunities in the Houston area. Mammography is perhaps the company’s next target, as most mammography centers in the area are hospital-based and difficult for the average woman to access. Although conjecture, this may simply be due to location, transportation and general resistance to hospital visits from a psychological standpoint.
As healthcare policy in the United States struggles to find footing at the political level, many companies are looking to position themselves in the correct field of service for wherever legislation decides to take heath care policy. Outpatient testing services do appear to be a fairly good and a safe bet for a profitable outcome. This outcome for future profitability also appears more secure then other bets because current services offered by the company are already accepted by Medicare and unlikely to be tampered with in any healthcare solution.
The issue of healthcare reform is slowly moving from not ‘if’ but ‘when’ reform will take place. Staking a claim as to where it will end up is now the opportunity at hand. The answer to “who will profit from the reform?” may be some time off, but there is little question that the companies that guess correctly now will be big winners.
