CubCrafters, the leading designer and manufacturer of light-sport, experimental and Part 23-certified backcountry aircraft, has built aircraft that has been flown around the world for many reasons. Brent Dodd and his CubCrafters Carbon Cub EX are flying for what may be the most important reason of all — to save lives. Serving in Mexico for the United Indian Mission, Dodd is the organization’s director of flight operations; he also serves as an airframe and power-plant mechanic and is the pilot of the Carbon Cub, which has been slightly modified for its life-saving work. According to Dodd, who was featured in a recent article AOPA article, the Carbon Cub’s 29-inch tires and AOSS suspension are a “huge plus” as he lands and takes off on a 600-foot-long, dirt airstrip in Mexico. The article notes that, during the past three years alone, Dodd has flown 477 people and 13,069 pounds of cargo to and from the rural villages and hospitals. “A ten-minute flight saves on average a three-hour drive on rough roads,” said missionary pilot Brent Dodd in the article. “And most people don’t have cars. . . . Because of the remoteness of the area that I fly in, if the hospital did not provide [air transport, these people] would have died.”
