A dear colleague of ours, who once owned a restaurant in New York, always knew exactly how his competition was doing, simply by checking the amount of their garbage. No matter how good an owner said he was doing, if he wasn’t generating mountains of garbage, chances are he wasn’t doing much business. It’s ironic that in order for any growth to take place, a certain amount of refuse MUST be generated, and this waste has become both a problem and an opportunity.
First, the problem. We live in a world that’s bursting with population. Just the everyday goings on of life creates a certain amount of “refuse” whether in the form of paper, plastic, glass, organics, human waste, construction debris, you name it. Garbage, or waste that’s manufactured in any form, must be quickly and correctly disposed of. The days of taking trash “out back” and dumping it anywhere you like is long long gone and thank goodness. It took us too long a time to become better stewards of our environment. Today with the population growth, proximity to each other, and the ever growing and crowded suburbs, keeping the streets clean is of paramount importance. Diseases and health issues are something no township or municipality needs.
Now for the opportunity. If you simply look at the paragraph above, what you see isn’t really a problem. It’s a demand issue. As an investor, one of the criteria I use to measure the attractiveness of a company is the demand factor. Is there any? In the case of waste management, the answer couldn’t be easier. There is actually more demand than we have adequate services for.
The company that’s positioning itself to benefit from all this demand, and do it in a new and novel way is Budget Waste Inc.
Budget Waste Inc., trading under the symbol BDGW, is a waste solutions company in Western Canada providing complete waste and recycling services to commercial, industrial, construction, homebuilding, oilfield and residential clients. While that may sound relatively arcane on the surface, one would be hard pressed to find a company with the “scope” of services that BWI brings to the table. In fact, that’s the theme of this article.
By offering a total solution from pick up to sorting, to recycling, to site implementations, etc, they are able to be a “one stop shop” for companies, municipalities, and retail customers looking to solve their waste problems. By offering “cradle to grave” type solutions, BWI can effectively solve any waste management issue, and do it for a price that’s less than the competition. Why? Because the competition has to “hire out” subcontractors, and everyone’s hand is in the pie. BWI does it all in house, meaning less confusion, less accounting, less paper work, and more productivity.
When you can offer a complete solution to a specific problem, and do it in a way that saves the company/township/homeowner money, you are onto something quite special in the business world. You’re on your way to big profits. Budget Waste is onto something folks, and you should take the time to check out their unique approach to this demanding opportunity.
