When you think of an eco-friendly car, does a small, compact, timid little thing come to mind? Green sports utility vehicles are expected to hit the streets soon, but it’s another vehicle that will steal the limelight and revolutionize the way we see green. When the Indy 500 flag drops May 27, 2008, the race cars will flash around the track powered by 100 percent fuel ethanol.
Indy cars have made a quick two-year evolution from pure methanol fuel, to an ethanol and methanol blend in 2006, and finally to pure ethanol in 2008. The Indy series, partnered with the ethanol industry, wants to prove that if ethanol is enough to fire the engine of a 675-horsepower Indy car, it can easily and efficiently run a minivan or SUV.
For companies such as Stratos Renewables Corp. (OTCBB: SRNW), the advantages of ethanol over gasoline are old news. Operating out of northern Peru, Stratos believes sugar-based ethanol is the answer to climbing oil prices, oil dependency and harmful environmental emissions. According to the company, sugar-based ethanol burns more cleanly, while creating more energy, than other sources of ethanol, such as corn.
For Stratos, news of the Indy-500s green conversion means the world is catching onto the importance of alternative fuels and their wide range of uses. For those attending the Indy-500, it means a great race with cleaner air.
