After the bell, VIASPACE announced that their subsidiary, Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corporation, acquired a fuel cell patent from Caltech. The patent is entitled “Organic Fuel Cell, and Methods of Operation Thereof and Manufacture of Electrode Therefor.”
The CEO of VIASPACE and Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corporation, Dr. Kukkonen, commented on the patent saying that it covers all organic fuels including methanol, ethanol, and formic acid. He expresses the importance of acquiring global patents in the two companies’ strategy to grow. The new patent will bring the total number of licensed fuel cell patents from Caltech to a total of about 59 issued and 59 pending fuel cell patents.
Fuel cells are expected to gain market share, from other power sources in portable electronics, because they offer a longer operating time and can charge electronics instantly by swapping disposable fuel cartridges.
