As Americans, all of us are dealing with the adverse effects of a relatively deep recession, so why are policymakers so reluctant to even say the word? Today Japan, as a number of other nations have done, admitted that its economy was suffering from a recession, and yet the National Bureau of Economic Research (the group responsible for officially declaring the status of our economy) seems to be afraid of what might happen if they tell the truth.
In a poll of some of America’s leading financial analysts, 96 percent believe that a recession is already underway; of those, 75 percent say that it will last well into the new year. The fact is, Americans have dealt with far worse circumstances, and can handle being told that the situation is indeed dire. Wake up, Washington; this is one tough nation of survivors.
