Oil Prices Continue to Fall

The price of crude oil set a record of $147.27 a barrel on July 11, but the price has dropped significantly since then in the last two months. This week’s trading saw crude oil prices down nearly $40, or 27%, to $107.89 on Thursday. “With prices falling so rapidly, I think OPEC would like to protect that $100 price barrier,” stated Gavin Went of the research firm Fat Prophets in Sydney. Stock Market Reacts in Early Hours to Announcement of Unemployment Data

Upon the release of unemployment numbers, the stock market has taken a dip in the initial hours of trading. The Labor Department announced that August saw a reduction of 84,000 jobs, which caused the unemployment rate to rise to a five-year high of 6.1%. In the first hour of trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 34.33, which is a 0.31% decrease, to 11,153.79. International Indexes on a Downward Trend

At least 5 International indexes reached a 52-week low today, which indicates investor concerns over weakening growth and uncertainty regarding the global economy. As a result of Friday’s trading, Singapore’s Straits Times index ended 2% lower, Taiwan’s Taiex ended 1.6% lower, Indonesia’s JSX Composite lost 2.5%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index dropped 2.2%, and China’s Shanghai Composite ended 3.3% for the week.
